The design of Aesop Stratford harks back to the strong architectural geometries of the Abbey of St Mary’s in Stratford Langthorne, which was founded in 1135 and became one of the largest monasteries in England—playing a major role in the area’s agricultural production and wheat milling. Our in-house designers were inspired by the axial arrangement of the cloister and the bold changes in ceiling height that delineate the most sacred spaces. We encourage a secular worship of sorts by turning mundane acts into sensorial rituals: washing one’s hands with something close to reverence; achieving immaculate skin via diligent application of a certain tonic; redeeming oneself with sublime bedtime hydration.

Such moments of quietude can be carved out in the central chamber of the store, which is characterised by its warm terracotta hues and dramatically vaulted ceiling. Acoustic plaster on high creates a hush conducive to meditative explorations of our formulations for the skin, hair and body at the communal basins—with flowing water, if desired. A distinctive ambulatory passage in crisp ivory tones surrounds the heart: here, patrons can peruse the full range of products, including fragrances for the self and home. Two individual basins allow for a degree of privacy during in-depth consultations. Above the shelf devoted to our non-conformist Eaux de Parfum, words of wisdom taken from the Aesop Book are fashioned into a form of concrete poetry.
